Vance Thompson Vision is proud to offer an innovative surgical procedure using the iStent Micro-Bypass device. The iStent is a microscopic device that, when implanted through the trabecular meshwork, creates a new pathway to help aqueous fluid naturally drain out of the eye. Approved by the FDA in 2012, the iStent is the smallest known medical implant on the market. The ophthalmology surgeons at Vance Thompson Vision are highly skilled in precise surgical techniques to lower intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. Glaucoma FAQs

Am I a Candidate for the IStent?

Ideal candidates for the iStent have received a glaucoma diagnosis and may or may not have cataracts. Most of the time, patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma attain the best outcomes. During your consultation at our South Sioux City, NE office, your doctor will examine your eyes and review your medical history and medications to determine whether you would be well-suited for the iStent device.

How the iStent Procedure Works

The iStent device is implanted during an outpatient surgery at Vance Thompson Vision. You will need a driver to take you home afterward. Before starting your procedure, we will numb your eyes with anesthetic eye drops and possibly give you some light sedation. This implant is often placed into the eye during cataract surgery so the same tiny incision made to remove the cataract can be used to insert the iStent. Once the device is implanted through the trabecular meshwork and into the Schlemm's canal (part of the eye's drainage channel), it increases the flow of aqueous fluid. This works to decrease intraocular pressure to lessen the ongoing need for glaucoma medications.

What to Expect

After your surgery, it is important to follow any important guidelines given by our office, including taking prescribed medications to prevent swelling and infection. In addition, be sure to attend all recommended follow-up appointments with your doctor. These visits will allow us to monitor your eye pressure and adjust your treatment plan as needed. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Vance Thompson Vision if you have questions or need assistance following your iStent procedure.
