About Common Eye Conditions
Maintaining optimal eye health means more than having great vision. At Vance Thompson Vision, our experienced ophthalmologists and optometrists are equipped with advanced technology to diagnose and address many eye conditions and diseases. Refractive errors, cataracts, keratoconus, and glaucoma are just a handful of the ocular health issues we can assess and treat. Eye issues can occur as a result of many factors, whether it is genetics, trauma, or injury, in addition to indirect causes, such as allergies or an illness. Whatever the reason, our board-certified doctors are committed to providing thorough, high-quality care to patients throughout the Siouxland area and beyond. If you have experienced vision problems, eye discomfort, or other challenges, contact Vance Thompson Vision to schedule a comprehensive eye exam.
Usually, as you approach age 40, your near eyesight tends to gradually worsen. This vision change is called presbyopia, and it impacts the ability to see objects up close. It happens because as we age, certain parts of our eyes simply start to thicken. Nearly everyone, even patients who have had 20/20 eyesight their whole lives, could begin to realize that they have to position labels or other items away from their eyes to see them clearly. Many also notice headaches or eye fatigue from tasks that never gave them issues previously. At Vance Thompson Vision, our doctors can provide effective options to improve your eyesight if you have developed age-related vision problems.
Keratoconus is an eye condition that results when the cornea becomes abnormally thin over time, causing it to bulge forward into a cone-like shape. This abnormality affects your ability to focus your eye correctly, which can lead to vision impairments.
A cataract is a cloudy spot on the eye that occurs when the proteins in your eye lens begin to degrade and bunch together. The cloudiness caused by cataracts progressively gets worse and keeps light from arriving at the retina properly. This fogging of the lens of the eye ultimately causes blurry eyesight, reduced night vision, glare, and problems seeing colors.
Although glaucoma is the second main cause of blindness in the U.S., the disease can typically be prevented. Glaucoma refers to a category of diseases that can deteriorate the optic nerve, which is in control of transmitting visual information to the brain. When left untreated, glaucoma will typically result in permanent blind spots and/or total vision loss. It is nearly always the result of increased intraocular pressure from fluid buildup. Our team can provide advanced glaucoma treatments, including MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery).
The cornea is the clear, outermost layer of the eye. It is possible for the normally round cornea to bulge into a cone shape as a result of chronic eye rubbing or an injury. This can cause blurry or diminished vision. To treat corneal problems, the specialists at Vance Thompson Vision offer corneal cross-linking (CXL), as well as full- and partial-thickness corneal transplants.

"I have been 100% satisfied with Vance Thompson with special recognition to Dr, Justin Schweitzer. I am a Keratoconus patient with two transplants. "Both my husband and myself received the services of Dr. Greenwood, one year apart. Our experience has been excellent. We both had lenses placed at the time of our cataract surgery so we would not need to wear glasses and are extremely happy with the results. I also needed stents placed to address my condition of high pressures in my eyes and to avoid problems with glaucoma. The only issue I encountered following my surgery was with the eyesight in one eye that was not “as sharp” as Dr. Greenwood felt it should be. With one simple procedure he was able to get the vision 20/20 in that eye also. From our initial clinic visit, the kindness of everyone from front desk clerks and examining nurses through the surgical procedures, and then the follow up call to inquire how we were doing from Dr. Greenwood himself the evening of our surgeries, we couldn’t be more satisfied or happy with the results and have recommended Dr. Greenwood to others."- N.R. / Healthgrades / Aug 20, 2020
"Without doubt, my complete experience at Vance Thompson Vision has been above and beyond compare. Every single person with whom I had contact was totally awesome - from the moment I called requesting an appointment through my departure from day-after-surgery check up. Sarah, Steph, Stephanie, Aimee, Dr. Ibach, Dr. Berdahl, Gideon, Chris, Becky, Jeremy . . . and just everyone! What an amazingly gracious team you have on board. Thank you for all the smiles, delightful communications, for uplifting my spirits, and giving me hope. I loved the surgery serenade, Dr. Berdahl and Surgical Team. Jeremy, I'm excited about staying in touch and learning everything possible about the Equinox study. Couldn't be more exciting news for the glaucoma crowd Go Team! Warmly, Jeanne Deller"- J.K. / Google / Nov 06, 2019
"Dr. Schmit and his staff were very knowledgeable and professional and made me feel very comfortable. As importantly they "listened" to me about my eye problems and prescribed specially prepared eye drops which solved my problem due to dry eyes. This was especially heartening to me as three other eye doctors from different institutions did not begin to solve my problem and basically "shined" me off. Dr. Schmit is an exemplary dry eye doctor."- D.C. / Google / Nov 06, 2017
"I had LASIK eye surgery at VTV in December and was very impressed! As a health care worker I was very impressed by their diagnostic testing they do before your procedure to measure your eye and even tear production. I went in for my free LASIK exam and they used a device to measure tear production and told me part of my problem with my contacts was dry eyes. I’ve worn contacts for 20 years and no other ophthalmologist ever tested me for dry eyes. They recommended tear duct plugs and they helped immediately! I went on to get LASIK after that and that was the best thing I’ve ever done. I love being able to see my babies in the middle of the night. I 100% recommend VTV everyone is so nice and they truly care!"- L.F. / Facebook / Jan 17, 2019
